The Cosener’s House

Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX14 3JD

The Cosener’s House occupies a picturesque Thames-side position in the grounds of the mediaeval Abbey of Abingdon, 8 miles from Oxford.

It takes its name from the Cuisinier of Kitchener (the official responsible for providing food for the Abbey). The older part of the present building is the central portion which dates from the mid-eighteenth century.

These days the House is a wonderful retreat to which Sally and her staff invite you to stay overnight in one of the comforable rooms or make use of the meeting rooms and catering facility. There are 50 bedrooms, 5 meeting rooms and a light and airy modern dining room with great views of the gardens and the Thames.

The Cherry Tree, Steventon

Time from site: 10 minutes (car)
Price range: £50-60 inc. breakfast

We choose the Cherry Tree because it gives our visitors a warm and friendly atmosphere to stay in. The en-suite rooms are comfortable and full of character, much like the pub itself. With a big fireplace, friendly staff and a choice of guest ales it feels like a home from home. Even being part of the pub – no one has ever complained about noise late at night.

For us, it tends to be visiting colleagues who stay. We can then stop in for a drink or something to eat with them, then we leave them to either make the most of the free WiFi or, more likely, make their way through the guest ales and chatting to the bar staff. Monday nights are the best night to stay – pub quiz night! There’s always a team you can join and get to know some locals and maybe even win a prize…

In the morning, they can choose from a variety of breakfast options from a quick bowl of cereal to a full English breakfast. It’s en route if you’re coming from Abingdon direction, so it’s very easy to swing by and pick people up. Otherwise, it’s a very short taxi ride to either the offices or the station.
