Local Pubs and Restaurants
Here are some recommendations from our campus community. This is not a complete list of local establishments – it is sure to grow as more recommendations are added – and does not imply any recommendation other than by the person quoted. However we hope you find something to whet your appetite.
The Wheatsheaf
Location: East Hendred
Time from site: 10 minutes (car)
Price range: mid – high range
http://www.thewheatsheaf.org.uk/index.html
If you like the country pub feel, The Wheatsheaf offers a great selection of food and drinks with a beer garden to boot. Great between friends, colleagues or guests.
I would recommend you book ahead and place a pre-order as it can get busy at lunchtime. It also means you sit straight down and make the most of a limited lunch hour. The menu is online, as well as a few pictures so you can scope the place out. Eleanor Holmes, Bunnyfoot
“Good food at reasonable prices. The pies are exceptional. Real ale always on and a log fire for the cold winter months.” Andy Bennett, STFC
The Q Tea rooms
Time from site: 7 minutes (car)
Price range: mid range
6 or 7 small tables in a conservatory setting and choice of freshly made sandwiches, pasties and cakes. A nice place for a small group of colleagues to go and grab a quick bite.
It can get quite busy, so make sure you have a plan B! If you do get a seat, then be prepared for a doorstop sandwich filled with a small, but tasty range of fillings. They also do pasties, sausage rolls and cakes if you feel like a treat on a cold day. Take a look around the farm shop on the way out and pick up a treat for the afternoon or something fresh for your dinner!
The Cherry Tree
Location: Steventon
Time from site: 10 minutes (car)
Price range: mid – high range
http://www.cherrytreesteventon.co.uk/home.php
Friendly staff, big tables, quality choice of food and a great selection of beers – The Cherry Tree is the place to go if celebrating an occasion amongst colleagues or welcoming visitors.
It’s a popular place so try and book ahead for lunchtimes if there are a few of you. The menu is online, so pre-orders are easy – then you can just roll in, sit down and start enjoying yourself straight away. Ask about their festive menus, discounts and home-made specials when you’re booking your table.
The Cherry Tree benefits from not only being one of my favourite pubs, but also because, for most people, it’s on the way home. Having said that, if you’re skiving off a Friday afternoon to sit in a nice pub garden, The Cherry Tree doesn’t have the best view. But, it does have a handy cash point at the Co-op and The Fox right next door if you find it’s full.
